No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national works. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
